Metaphors For War :: essays research papers
The use of metaphors are an important factor with any piece of literature. Metaphors add color to creative writings, also establishing depth. A story without metaphors is lifeless, unable to compose another way to view it. The term for a metaphor is a figure of speech in which term is transferred to something it does not literally apply to, this helps the brain create a mental picture which the person might easily understand what the character is feeling. When a person finally makes the connection between the metaphor and the idea, the story takes a deeper meaning. In the story by E.M. Remarque, 'All Quiet on the Western Front', you see a vast quantity of metaphors to connect the characters thoughts together. While reading this book, you may decide to ignore the metaphors, by not truly understanding the meaning they portray. In this, you fail to grasp the emotions that the author relates to you in the tale of the soldiers of the book. If you take the time to appreciate what the author writes by using metaphors the story will be more enjoyable. Understanding metaphors is not always easy, many people get similes and metaphors mixed up. A simile is nothing more then a baby metaphor. You must be able to pick out a metaphor in the story, no matter how minuscule. For even though it may appear small, it might be a lead to another far bigger metaphor. Through this, the intended meaning will appear. When Paul the main character, refers to the front as a whirlpool, this is quite a large metaphor, with a deeply rooted meaning. "To me the front is a mysterious whirlpool. Though I am in still water far away from its centre, I feel the whirl of the vortex sucking me slowly, irresistibly, inescapably into itself" (Ch.4,Pg55) This is saying that though he is not even close to the front, he still feels the effects from his position. It creates the mental picture that Paul is a boat in a large ocean, and far in the distance the whirlpool is barely seen on the horizon. Though slowly, maybe without him even realizing it, he is being pulled towards the whirlpool. This is an example of a metaphor and the mental images it creates to help people understand the book. The author also has a cage represent the front, "The front is a cage in which we must await fearfully

Rhetorical Analysis of Thomas Jeffersonââ¬â¢s Inaugural Address Essay
Ethos ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Utterly, indeed, should I despair did not the presence of many whom I here see remind me that in the other high authorities provided by our Constitution I shall find resources of wisdom, of virtue, and of zeal on which to rely under all difficulties.â⬠In this section Jefferson names the first official document of America and states that it has provide and will provide the U.S. with everything it needs to be successful. Jefferson mentions his trust that he puts in the document and all that wrote it. Jefferson shows the citizens that because he and others made the document, they should be trusted, because the Constitution made America free from British rule. The Constitution unifies the U.S. also, it only states what need be, not things like divisions of political parties and what not. Diction ââ¬â Jeffersonââ¬â¢s constant use of words like us and we helps bring the U.S. together as a country regardless of whether you are federalist or democratic republican. It eases the tension between both parties. Pathos ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Called upon to undertake the duties of the first executive office of our country, I avail myself of the presence of that portion of my fellow-citizens which is here assembled to express my grateful thanks for the favor with which they have been pleased to look toward me, to declare a sincere consciousness that the task is above my talents, and that I approach it with those anxious and awful presentiments which the greatness of the charge and the weakness of my powers so justly inspire.â⬠Jefferson begins his address by telling us he is thankful for being elected President and he states that he is humble by saying that he will provide the nation with the best care possible, no matter the cost. This statement hardens the peopleââ¬â¢s belief that they have chosen the right person for the job. He says he is grateful and humbled by the offer, there for appealing to our patriotism and admiration for who he is. Tone ââ¬â Jeffersonââ¬â¢s tone throughout the address is both humble and asserting. He states that he is both grateful and humbled by the offer of a Presidency. He also asserts his opinions and notions of unity and the countryââ¬â¢s strength, invigorating the audience. Audience ââ¬â The majority of the audience does prefer one side or the other regarding political parties. This speech is intended to reach out to everyone, including children. I think some might say that he is favoring Republicans, which may affect the tone of the speech for them. Everyone, however, is united as a nation by the address regardless of their political views.

Organic Chemistry lab Determination of the Structure of a Natural Assignment
Organic Chemistry lab Determination of the Structure of a Natural Product in Anise Oil - Assignment Example The moleculeââ¬â¢s index of hydrogen deficiency is 10. This implies that there are 5 rings or double bonds in the structure. Each one would then compensate for the two of the hydrogen atoms that are not there (Lehman, p.292-294). Upon catalytic hydrogenation of anise oil, a saturated compound with a chemical formula C10H20O, it points to the original structure to be containing four pibonds, since eight hydrogen atoms were added (Lehman, p.292-294). Aliquat 336 functions as phase transfer catalyst, it provides green chemistry procedures. If it was not added, the experiment would not have been environmentally friendly due to the hazardous wastes produced during the chemical reactions. B) The Ph 7 of the filtered reaction mixture indicates a neutral mixture. It points to addition of insufficient 6M HCL which was required to make the reaction mixture acidic. The reaction mixture ought to have turned brown after addition of anise oil and heat, which turns white in addition of

Ad analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Ad analysis - Essay Example This essay considers the specific aspects of audience, picture, language, and technique, as they are implemented in a Prudential advertisement that is featured in the current issue of the New Yorker. Audience The specific advertisement was found in an issue of the New Yorker. With this concept in mind itââ¬â¢s possible that the intentions of the advertiser were to reach a more educated audience, who already has a general understanding of financial aspects and upper-level vocabulary and comprehension skills. In these regards, the extent the audience is clearly middle to upper class and educated. Picture There are a great many visual techniques implemented in the advertisement. The first notable concept is that the advertising consists of a full page spread with an entirely dark blue background. The effect of this is such that it creates a juxtaposing effect in relation to the heavy text-based stories that constitute the majority of the magazine. In terms of specific pictures, in th e upper-right hand of the advertisement a city backdrop is pictured in muted-tones. The signification of this imagery seems to indicate that Prudential has a urban feel, perhaps reminiscent of Wall-Street. This is further indicative of an understanding of financial systems as being rooted in industrial or urban life. The very functions of the urban experience demonstrate the gear and wheels of the working economy; indeed, right next to the picture of buildings are pictures of gears in motion. Pictured even further to the left of these individuals is a small man in yellow. The implications of this imagery seem to empathize with the potential customer or client. In essence, the advertising is situating the reader in the position of the small man in yellow, and the Prudential advertisement is saying that through going to Prudential for financial advice will result in the individual being able to navigate this challenging urban environment. Language Perhaps unique to this advertisement is the reliance it places on text. One possible explanation for this is the obvious implication that since the advertisement is from the New Yorker, it is believed that the audience will be more interested in reading text than perhaps in a publication such as People or ESPN the Magazine. In fact, text is featured in two long columns throughout the entire body of the page. In terms of the actual language that is implemented, the first relies on a rhetorical feel, attempting to empathize and draw the reader into the advertisement. Even though it is featured in the New Yorker, the text still retains a crisp and to-the-point tone. Phrases such as, ââ¬Å"What if today was the day we took on the big challenges?â⬠are balanced against more financially specific language such as, ââ¬Å"What if we could help create more reliable and durable forms of financial security?â⬠Ultimately, itââ¬â¢s clear that the language remains in traditional advertising form, while acknowledging th at the reader is aware of general financial terminology. Technique The overall technique is the creation of an advertisement that doesnââ¬â¢t insult the readerââ¬â¢s intelligence, conforms to traditional advertising trends, and considers the medium in which it will be displayed. The overall signification of the advertisement seems to indicate that through Prudentialââ¬â¢s experience the reader will be able to navigate the challenges of the contemporary financial environment. In these regards, the text moves from a general rhetorical style to more specific information related to reader interest. It implements contrast to bring out the heading ââ¬ËBring Your Challengesââ¬â¢ which also represents the general theme of the advertisement. It also displays this theme in visual ways through the juxtaposition of the sm

Research paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Research Paper Example Consequently, the innocent young girl encounters an enormous wolf in the woods in the process of delivering food to her grandmother. Thus, the young girl innocently informs the wolf of her destination. The wolf then goes ahead and swallows the girlââ¬â¢s grandmother. Unsatisfied, the evil wolf decides to wait for the young girl in the pretense of her grandmother. However, upon arrival the young girl notices some strange behaviors concerning her grandmother. First, her voice was extremely deep. In addition, her eyes and hands were also immensely enormous. Moreover, her mouth was also enormous. However, before the little girl could unravel the happenings the wolf pounced on her and swallowed her (Zipes 4). With his tummy full, the wolf fell into a deep sleep. However, in his deep sleep a stranger comes to the rescue of the duo. He cuts the wolfââ¬â¢s belly open with a saw to the delight of Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother who emerge from the wolfââ¬â¢s belly unscathe d. Therefore, in order to teach the evil wolf a lesson the trio fills its belly with stones. Eventually, when the wolf wakes up he decides to run away, however, the stones weigh him down. Consequently, he collapses and dies. Therefore, it is clear that the tale attempts to outline the dangers of the enormous forest. In comparison with forest, the village offers a safe home as opposed to the former. Therefore, the tale was aimed at checking little children from engaging in dangerous practices since they could end up being harmed. COMPARISON WITH OTHER TALES Other tales such as Peter and the Wolf or The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids also employ a similar thematic footing. In both cases, the tales paint a thematic scenario in which an individual emerges unscathed from the belly of an evil wolf. As such, this thematic setting has been embraced by other numerous tales (Meidell 175). This overwhelming semblance to other fairy tales can be attributed to the origin of the tale reason being that the tale embraces a medieval bias that was popular in the ancient times. This similarity can also be associated with the moral lessons learnt from the tale. HISTORY OF LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD TALE Little Red Riding Hood has its origin rooted in various versions of the story in Europe. Consequently, its original versions date back to the 17th century (Iona and Peter 93). However, the tale was also told in both Italy and France in the fourteenth century. Consequently, this version was referred to as The False Grandmother. Therefore, this implies that the title of the tale varied from one region to another. As such, the original versions significantly differ from the present day versions (Tatar 17). For instance, the antagonist of the story needs not necessarily be a wolf. This implies that in other versions of the tale the antagonist is presented as a different character. For instance, an ogre is employed as an antagonist instead of a wolf. Other manuscripts also depict the antago nist in the form of a dragon. Nevertheless, the antagonist is depicted as a wolf in most cases. Since the tale is mainly meant for young audiences, the depiction of the antagonist as a wolf enables the audiences to easily associate and relate with the tale while appreciating its message. Consequently, depiction of the antagonist as an ogre may be effective for African audiences. However, in all these versions, the antagonist is depicted as an enormous and dangerous being. Moreover, the antagonist is
